Carlisle in Atlas of 1858

space

[I]n 1751 the Proprietary town of Carlisle was laid out, ranking as such with Philadelphia, York, Easton, and Reading. It was well planned, with the two principal streets, Hanover and High, each 80 feet wide and all others 60 feet in width. Each lot was 60 feet by 240 feet in size. The town, which was rectangular in shape, extended two blocks in each direction from the Square, each farthest street named for its direction by the compass, North, East, South and West. For a time West Street was known as Allen in honor of the representative in the Supreme Council, while East Street was originally called Howe Street, after the English general, or Water Street because of its proximity to the LeTort. The present Hanover Street was first called York, since it led to the neighboring county town of that name. Bedford, Louther, and High Streets were reminiscent of the English namesake Carlisle, while Pitt Street bore the name of the younger Pitt, friend of the early colonists. Pomfret Street was so named for the father-in-law of Thomas Penn, the first Earl of Pomfret, whose daughter was Lady Julian Fermore. The first lots were sold for a nominal sum of money. A ticket was given to the owner obligating the purchaser to "improve his land" by some building (usually 20 feet square, of stone, brick or square timber) within a period of two to five years or surrender his right to the lot purchased.
