Appeal for Workers Opens War Loan Drive

With an appeal for volunteer workers, leaders opened the Sixth War Loan Drive in Duquesne today.
Although crews have been set up and the house-to-house canvass started today, Drive Chairman Willis F. Doney urged all persons able to aid with the drive to report at either of the city banks.
"With the Allies driving toward Berlin, demanding more ammunition and more equipment of all kinds," Mr. Doney said, "we must concentrate on this phase of the home front efforts with all our energy."
City divisions entered the drive in an organized manner similar to past campaigns. Schools, the city payroll and other units conducted their own collections.
Members of the permanent workers' staff are handling the house-to-house canvass, soliciting in most places the all-important Series E bond. The bond, which is of the small denomination type, is the basis of the drive, leaders said.
Both the Duquesne plant of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. and the city have joined the solicitation, and will combine efforts for the community total.
Last summer the Fifth War Loan Drive went past $2,700,000 to set an all-time record for the city, and to place the community well up in the campaigns through the state. Leaders and workers expressed hope today that the new drive would pass that amount.
