Wilkinson
Resigns As Grid Coach At Clairton
Harold
Wilkinson of 1100
Duquesne Blvd. Has resigned as Head Grid Coach of
the Clairton High School football Bears. The
Clairton Board of Education acted on the
resignation at its meeting Monday
evening.
Wilkinson's coaching
career commenced several years ago when he was made
assistant to William P. Lemmer, who at that time
was head coach for Junior High football in
Duquesne. His leadership ability sparked his
promotion, and Wilkinson moved to Duquesne Senior
High, to serve as John Donelli's assistant on the
gridiron coaching staff. When Donelli was inducted
into the armed forces, Wilkinson was given the Head
Coach berth and enjoyed great success as mentor to
our little Dukes. After a few years here he went to
baldwin Twp. High as head football coach and had
two successful seasons there, moving to Clairton in
the [fall] of '46 to take over head
coaching duties with the Bears. Mediocre success
followed and yet his '48 gridders turned in one of
the biggest upsets in the Year of football Upsets.
The same year Penn State bit the dust when it faced
Pitt, the same year the Dukes went all the way with
no defeats under the arc lights only to lose their
WPIAL chances in an afternoon game at Donora --
that's the year Wilkinson's Clairton Bears tied the
strong McKeesport Tigers 6-6 in a game which saw
the Tigers as heavy favorites at kick-off
time.
Mr. Wilkinson and his wife
have two sons, George
and David.
The older is a member of the DHS football squad and
in the fall will commence his senior year at the
local high school. One of the biggest thrills of
last year's grid season for George was the
Duquesne-Clairton game when he saw action against
the team that Papa coached.
(Note to Stinner and
Zeleznik -- There's more football material on the
way. David hits Duquesne Junior High in
September.)
