Notes for Annie Butler

Annie ran a small grocery store, primarily in order to be able to purchase food at wholesale prices for her large family. She couldn't read and had to rely on the honesty of her customers. The McDermotts were relatively well-off. Bernard was a coffee/tea blender and a jeweler. They owned rental properties in addition to their home over the store on Wilmot Street, which had two parlors, one for everyday and one for "good". Every Sunday the Powers family came to visit after Mass with their 10-12 children and Annie and her daughters brought forth a huge Sunday dinner.1, 12 Oct 1996
Most of the children were delivered by Grannie Qualters, midwife. The Qualters were a prolific German family in Duquesne.

The McDermott boys worked in the steel mill. The girls took hot lunches to them everyday. The girls were also responsible for helping the laundry woman do the wash for the family. When each girl graduated from high school, she received a fur coat and pearl necklace from their parents. The boys didn't marry until the girls completed their schooling. The boys did not go to college.
The house on Friendship Street was built where there had once been a barn on the McDermott property. Annie and Bernard owned at least the two blocks between Wilmont Street and the street behind Aunt Margaret's house. Annie Butler bore 15 children.
