JAMES TOPLEY
February 13, 1906
James Topley, Sr., one of the best
known old residents of this section and one of the first to
settle in North Versailles township, is dead at the Topley
homestead in that township as a result of an attack of
pneumonia, while his little grandson, James Topley, the
Third, is lying at the point of death with the same disease,
not more than several hundred feet from where his
grandfather passed away. A peculiar feature in connection
with the death of Mr. Topley is that both he and his
grandson, who is just seven years old, contracted the
disease on the same day. When the physician was called to
attend the boy he was sent over to look after the
grandfather. This was about a week ago. Today the
grandfather died, and when the news reached the grandchild,
his condition became alarming and it is not thought that he
can recover. James Topley, Sr., was aged about 69 years. He
was born in England and came to this country many years ago.
He was one of the first to settle in North Versailles
township, where he has resided ever since. Mr. Topleys
death occurred at exactly 12 oclock today. He was a
member of the Cumberland Presbyterian church of this city,
also a deacon and one of the leaders of the congregation.
Mr. Topley was also a member of Alliquippa lodge, No. 367,
Knights of Pythias, of the Eighth ward, being one of the
three surviving charter members up until the time of his
death. He is survived by five daughters, Anna, wife of
William Russell; Mary, wife of C.D. Richards; Agnes, wife of
Thomas Moore, all of east McKeesport; Maggie, wife of
William Stucki, of the Fawcett plan; and Rachel, wife of
Arthur Binn, of East McKeesport; also two sons, James
Topley, Jr., the well known ice and coal dealer, and John
Topley, both of whom reside in North Versailles township
adjoining the old homestead of their father. Mr. Topley is
also survived by a number of grandchildren and great
grandchildren. The funeral arrangements have not been
